Online Groups is a form of community of members from different part world discuss on a particular issue .
Are these groups meant for web promotions / increase page ranking ?
yes , some of the group at Yahoo , Google and MSN allow their users to post a free advertisement .People post their advertisments to such groups for free .We can define it Free Web Promotions in groups. But many Administrator don't allow their users to post a free advertisement consider advertisements as spam messages . They may block your site by contacting your hosting company.
Web promotions through forum of different site could be a source for free web promotions .
Join their forum while discussing on various topic many user / members attach their site link (signature) .This method can be called as indirect web promotions .
When a Robot Crawler crawl these forums / groups .it found your link on these foums .When crawler finds out a link of your site .This results in a improvement in your page rank also.
On the same time , These forums also give some traffic to your site . Many proffessional came to know about product and services. This could result in some sale of your products.
